Open Rehearsal: “Musical Companions” Participating Schools

Western instrumentalists from Secondary 1 to 6 make up the three large ensembles: the Concert Band, String Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra. Over the years, these ensembles have achieved first places in various local inter-school music festivals. The DGS Symphony Orchestra has performed in Taipei, Tainan, Macau, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, and received high acclaims for the many collaborative performances with local secondary schools. The Orchestra has also collaborated with established artists including choreographer Mui Cheuk-yin and Russian pianist Ilya Itin, as well as renowned Hong Kong pianist Nicolette Wong, under the direction of Leung Kin Fung, the school’s Performing Arts Director, , founder of Hong Kong Pure Strings and First Associate Concertmaster of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. The Symphony Orchestra is currently conducted by Dorothy Hui.

Since its establishment in 2002, La Salle College Symphony Orchestra has developed and grown rapidly. Now boasting more than 80 members, the orchestra is currently under guidance from conductors Mr Kelvin Ngai and Mr John Sit.

During 2016, the orchestra has obtained spectacular results in two main interschool symphony orchestra competitions. With the challenge of playing Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, the orchestra won the Gold Prize at the 2016 Hong Kong Youth Music Interflows Symphony Orchestra Contest, and was named first runner-up at the 69th Hong Kong Schools Music Festival Senior Class Symphony Orchestra Competition.

Throughout the years, the La Salle College Symphony Orchestra has continuously pursued excellence, and has played numerous pieces such as Tchaikovsky’s Fourth and Sixth Symphonies to broaden the musical horizons of its members. For the same purpose, the orchestra has also participated in a number of joint performances with well-established orchestras of famous schools in Hong Kong, including Heep Yunn School and St Stephen’s Girls College, fusing expertise and reaching great heights together.
